Nigerians protest removal of fuel subsidy

One protester has been killed as thousands of Nigerians have demonstrated against the removal of a fuel subsidy, which has led petrol prices and transport fares to double. Officials say the man was killed by "mob action" in Kwara state, while witnesses say he was shot by police as they tried to disperse protesters.

There were marches in Lagos and other cities around the country. Although Nigeria is the biggest oil producer in Africa, they import refined petrol.
Police fired tear gas at youths in the commercial capital, Lagos, after the youths blocked main roads with protests, set up burning barricades and tried to form petrol stations to close.

Prices have increased from 65 naira per litre to at least 140 naira in filling stations and from 100 naira to at least 200 on the black market, where many Nigerians buy their fuel.
There are reports that petrol prices have tripled in some remote areas, while commuters have complained that motorcycle and minibus taxi fares have already doubled or tripled, leaving many people stranded in Lagos as they cannot afford to get back home.
Not only that, many Nigerians expect the prices of other goods to rise as well.
The government has said it will spend the money saved by removing the subsidy on improving the country's erratic electricity supply, as well as health and education. However, analysts say that many Nigerians have little faith that the money will be well spent on the citizens of Nigeria and fear it will instead be stolen by corrupt officials.
In December, the government released a list of the people who benefit most from the subsidy, which include some of Nigeria's richest people - the owners of fuel-importing firms. Years of mismanagement and corruption mean Nigeria does not have the capacity to refine oil into petrol and other fuels.
Several previous governments have tried to remove the subsidy but have backed down in the face of widespread public protests and reduced it instead.
The IMF has long urged Nigeria's government to remove the subsidy, which costs a reported $8bn (£5.2bn) a year.

For example, you shouldn't call someone who's disabled "retarded". And you shouldn't call someone who's handicapped "crippled".

So, we want you to research about all these terms, and during the first week of December, post all these facts and whatever you know on all the social sites / wherever you can! Spread knowledge! :) (You can do your research here)

Hello everyone! Attention. Important notice. Change of plans AGAIN, so sorry.

DC 2011 (ICCPJ)

That's the site where all the updates will be posted. To those who didn't get my email with the forms, you can get it from there.

Earlier I said to pass up the forms on Friday, but change of plans.
I will be at SMK ASSUNTA'S BUS STOP with the other presidents this FRIDAY (25/11) from 930am-11am to wait for the forms + money. You'll need to pay RM180 + RM20 (RM20 for insurance, so please pay it separately. Bring exact change!). Make sure you have all your forms filled up by then! I'll get Pengetua's signature for everyone.

Also, TEXT ME IF YOU ARE GOING by tomorrow (Thursday 24/11/11) 10PM so I know whether or not to wait for you guys.

If I don't get your text, I'll assume you're not going.

I encourage everyone to attend! If you're afraid of not having any friends, trust me, you will make new ones. I was the only Form 3 from ICSA last year and I had a blast!

Hello girls! Just in case you have not read the post on the ICSA Facebook group, there will be no more general meetings this year as Puan Usha says the 2011 co-curriculum term has ended. Not only that, but it's only about a month to finals so we will all be busy studying. We don't want Interact to interfere with your studies!

However, no general meetings does not mean no meetings at all! We will try to have informal meetings this year to inform and discuss about upcoming projects. Don't worry, we won't be disturbing the exam period.

It Gets Better

Hi guys!

A few days ago, I received a text from Int. Navini that opened my eyes to a few things, and I thought I'd like to share it with you guys.

This is what the text said: "Did you know that the suicide rate among teenagers all over the world is increasing as we speak? Bullying is a major cause of suicide among teens. The thing about suicide is, you won't know if someone is going to commit suicide until it's too late. Join the It Gets Better Project and let teenagers all over the globe know that it gets better. Spread the word. Log on to www.itgetsbetter.org today and help make a difference :)"

Now, some of you may have heard about the It Gets Better project, some of you may have even watched the music video for Rise Against's song "Make It Stop (September's Children)" in support of this project.

Fundamentally, this project aims to show support for what they call "LGBT youth", short for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transexual youth. But it goes beyond that.

This project also aims to promote equality among everyone, no matter what race, gender, religion, sexuality or the colour of your skin.

I myself have pledged to join this cause. I've pledged to spread this message to my friends, family and neighbours. I've pledged to speak up against hate and intolerance whenever and wherever I see it.

Because everyone deserves to be respected for who they are.

INTERACT QUIZ COMPETITION 2011

Hello girls! On Sunday, 14th August 2011 (that's a day after our Installation!), Rotary Club of Bandar Sunway is holding their annual Interact Quiz Competition. We have been cordially invited to participate!

The prizes include scholarships worth RM175,000 for higher education at SUNWAY UNIVERSITY for the members of the winning teams. There are also many spot and lucky draw prizes for the teams during the preliminary and final rounds!

ICSA can send as many teams as we wish (Some clubs have sent in TEN teams!). If you are interested to participate, please contact me at ASAP! I will be photocopying the forms for you. :)

EVENT DETAILS

-MULTIPURPOSE HALL, SUNWAY UNIVERSITY
-Light refreshments will be served at about 1000hrs.

The quiz will be on general knowledge covering the following topics:

CHAMPIONS - Challenge Trophy, Winners Plaques and three FULL scholarships (tuition fees waiver) to any Diploma programme at Sunway University. Estimated maximum worth of prizes for champions is RM84,000!

There will also be prizes for FIRST RUNNER-UP, SECOND RUNNER-UP, 4TH PLACING, 5TH PLACING AND 6TH PLACING! So what are you waiting for?!

Of course, there are some Eligibility & Rules we are required to obey.
Here are some of them :

-Each team will comprise of three participants from the same Interact Club. Any number of teams can participate from each Interact Club, however only two teams are eligible to feature in the finals. Where there is more than one team from a particular Interact Club, teams should be given suitable names, such as "Team Pintar", followed by the name of the club.

-The entry fee is RM30.00 per team. All participants should carry valid identification on the day of the quiz.

Based on the forms that I have, there are 14 more points in the Eligibility & Rules.

Important Things You Have To Take Note About !

Hello girls ! There are a lot of things going on since a new term is starting, and we need to get EVERYTHING done by our Installation. So please co-operate, and read everything below :)

1. Monday (25/7/2011) :

- We will be having uniform measurements, for whoever that ordered uniforms. By that, I meant current interactors who ordered, probationers from the 1st intake earlier of the year and also the 2nd intake girls. It will be held at the Gallery, from 2.00pm till 2.30pm. I WANT EVERYBODY TO BE THERE. If you ended up not getting your uniform, then I am so sorry but you will not be installed during Installation. After the bell rings at 2.00pm, go straight to the gallery.

- After uniform measurements, you can go and eat for 15 minutes :) At 2.45pm till 3.30pm, there will be an Installation meeting at the Bilik Kuliah Bakti. We will be discussing about our Installation and choosing the organizing committee. So this meeting is VERY IMPORTANT and everyone is COMPULSORY to attend it. You guys want our Installation to be a success, don't you ?!

- From 3.30pm till 4.30pm, there will be a written test for the 2nd intake girls. So please tell any of your friends who are planning to join Interact to come for this written test. It will also be held at the Bilik Kuliah Bakti.

2. Wednesday (27/7/2011) :

- There will be an interview for the 2nd intake girls. Attention also to probationers who joined the 1st intake earlier of the year. You ALSO have to come for this interview since you haven't gone through any interviews since you became a probationer, so yeah. It is COMPULSORY for EVERY PROBATIONER to come for this interview. Please spread the word. Your dress code will be your school uniform. The time and venue has yet to be confirmed, so please check the notice board everyday as we will be posting it up once it has been confirmed.

3. I have pasted a lot of order forms on the notice board regarding club t-shirt, name tag and uniform since Tuesday (19/7). I really, really hope each and everyone of you including the 2nd intake girls have written down your orders as I am taking the lists down on Friday (22/7). If you didn't get to write your orders down, then I am so sorry. I already gave you 4 days to write it down. So yeah, it is important for you to check the notice board every single day !

4. The prices for uniform, club t-shirt and name tags has not been confirmed yet. Once I get to know the prices, I will post it on the notice board and also the club board so that you guys can calculate the total you have to pay, and you guys can start paying up :)

5. Attention to CURRENT INTERACTORS. I am sure all of you have your uniforms already right. Girls who wear short skirts, please bring your short skirts and a PJ t-shirt on Monday (25/7/2011). After school, please change into your short skirt and your PJ t-shirt and go straight to the Gallery. I will be checking the length of your short skirts. If it does not lie on your knee level, then I am sorry but you will have to buy a new skirt. As you all know, we are being really strict about our uniform this term. After I have checked and everything is settled, please change back into your school uniform as we will be having an installation meeting and it is formal.

I think that is all I have to inform for now. Please check the club blog and the notice board EVERYDAY as I will be posting up information a lot these few days. So yeah, thank you !

Now, I will be posting the shifts for tomorrow. I'm really sorry, but I know most of you wanted 1st shift. But of course not everyone can work during first shift, right? Sorry guys but please cooperate alright. Fyi, I chose completely randomly based on the order you guys jotted your names down on the board.

*Cleanliness representatives for every shift; basically you guys are in charge of making sure our stalls are clean AT ALL TIMES. You are not stationed at a specific stall but if you are needed by your friends, please don't hesitate to help. Make sure our area is tidy at all times.

*Polaroid duty; I know we initially planned for the backdrop in France etc but unfortunately we had very little time to actually carry it out. So, there will be three people throughout the carnival (one for every shift) going around with a polaroid camera taking pictures for people ; charging RM 5 each ok.

Keng Jean will be taking attendance BY 0730HOURS. From 0700hrs - 0730hrs. Alright? She will also be taking attendance at 1530HOURS. When the carnival ends.

NOW, YOUR ATTIRE. Lots of people have been asking me if they can wear jeans. I'm very, very, very sorry everyone but we cannot. La Salle does not allow us to. We can only wear normal pants, sports pants, or tights.

The concept is similar, except this year the carnival will be open to public! We will also be inviting children from homes to come in and join in the fun!

International Understanding Day 2011!

Hi girls. How are you today? Yeah, anyway, i'm posting this on behalf of our IU Director, Int Ashwini Raveendranath.

Here's the thing. To add an impact to our IU Day, all interactors and probationers are required to wear an outfit that resembles the natives. It doesn't only have to orang asli Malaysia. It can be anything. Like native americans or whatsoever.Please see the photos below for examples of what you can wear on that day. Thanks! Dress nicely !

As most of you already know by now, CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL will be having their INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING DAY this SATURDAY (30APR2011) from 9am - 12pm. They are conducting a FOOD DRIVE to collect packeted and canned food to donate to the relief fund in Japan. If you want to donate, please pass your donations to either Int. Hanna Haizal (4SA) or Int. Ghythri Sivanasan (5SC) by this FRIDAY (29APR2011).

Examples of what you can donate: sugar, salt, tuna, condensed milk, baked beans, etc. It's up to you! :)

It completely slipped our minds that there is school on Saturday and it'll be rushing for us to go after school, plus it would be very tiring as well. Since we have to plan our projects around the school takwim, we don't have many available dates. Attention to the nominees for the Board of Directors for 2011/2012, here are your assignments set by each respective Board of Director, as promised.

When you click on the link to the post you're running for, a new page will open to Google Docs. In the middle is a preview of your assignment. All assignments are in Word 97 - 2003 format, so it should be okay for you to download & view it no matter what version of Microsoft/Mac you are using :-)

Under the title of the document you will see links titled "Share", and next to it, "Download (__ KB)". You are supposed to click that and download the document.

Here's a pictorial example:

Next, once you have that covered, you will need to make sure that all the pages in your assignments have your name, class, year, and post you are running for in the top right hand corner of EVERY page. This is as a precautionary measure in case some pages from your assignment goes missing, we will know that it is your assignment.

Finally, once you have completed everything in your assignment, please pass it up in an A4 sized envelope.

Alrighty then, the following are your assignments:

The Board of Directors have deliberated and decided that the deadline for your assignments is 13th June 2011, the first day after the midterm holidays at 2 pm. Please keep in mind that punctuality is of utmost importance, as the first commandment is "Thou shall be punctual"!

Hello Interactors! I hope you guys have had a great week :-)

There are several issues I'd like to address in this post.

The first thing is that there will be a General Meeting on Monday (18/4), from 2.30 pm - 4.00 pm (as shown on the sidebar on the right). To clear up any misgivings you might have about this meeting, Sukantara has been postponed to the following week, so there is no excuse for you not to come!

Secondly, remember the Amazing Race that we were supposed to have during School Spirit Week? Well, it hasn't been cancelled, just postponed to next Friday (22/4). Those who have volunteered as base masters during the race, we would like for you to convene for a short while after the meeting on Monday to discuss the order, flow and such of the race. If you have any notes/suggestions from before, please do not hesitate to bring it up on Monday.

Third and lastly, for the Editor nominees, you are required to help me publish the Newsletter as part of your assignment. The content and such have been compiled, all you have to do is the design and publishing of it. Please see me shortly after meeting on Monday for further explanations.

ICSA's annual International Understanding Cookout commenced today, and photos are as follows.

For those of you who didn't participate/could not attend, the objective of this project is to widen the knowledge about other cultures as well as their cuisines. This project was held in the Bilik Masakan and hosted 5 groups, each with a different country to work with. Each group was given the freedom to interpret their theme however they wanted to.

To the Interactors / probationers under the Community Service avenue, how are your projects getting along? I haven't heard any updates from any of you (except a certain one or two). I sure hope everything's better than fine because as you know, it's already halfway into March and we still have A LOT of projects to carry out before the term is over! So the sooner you confirm with me all the details and information you have, the sooner we can confirm and book a date for your project. The sooner your project will be carried out and the sooner all of you get to participate!

If you're not sure about anything, please don't hesitate to contact me via my Facebook profile link (it's on the Board of Directors column on the sidebar on the right). In fact, I'd appreciate if you did come and ask me because that way, I would know exactly what's happening. I'd be more than willing to help!

Gentle reminder:

For the projects that you need to plan, basically, you're supposed to get the contact details of all the organisations involved. You're supposed to plan the objective of the project, and when you're planning to carry it out. Think of it this way, you're the organising chairperson for this event, therefore you need all the details to make sure everything runs smoothly right? So make sure you have all those details! (Think who, what, when, where, why, how! Who will be involved, what is the project about, when are you going to carry it out, etc.)

Don't be shy okay. I don't bite. :D Do your best and make ICSA proud!!

Anyway, as most of you probably know, Int. Sarah Damia's away at Mekah to perform umrah. I'm not sure if she has informed all of you but while she's away, I'll be in charge of collecting the orders and money for the ICC tickets that you're selling. Int. Sarah will be distributing the tickets herself when she gets back so basically, you just pay to me, okay? Make sure you've already got people to sell tickets to! SELL AS MANY AS YOU CAN!

First off, we'd like to thank the Interactors that attended the short meeting Int. Thabeena, Int. Yasshene, Int. Hanna and I held after school concerning the Amazing Race, thank you for your cooperation!
Secondly, those involved in the stations and the management and such for the Amazing Race, please talk to your respective group leaders by tomorrow about what you have to do.
We will be holding another short meeting after school tomorrow (Friday, 11/3) before the race to set up and stuff. The first station will be at the Pondok Ilmu (near the canteen), so that's where all the groups will be starting.

Hey Girls! (:

I heard some people did not get their cookies/candies or we might have mixed up the orders. Reason being to this was we had many orders and too little manpower (and come on, humans make mistakes especially when we've been writing the names/cross-checking/tying the papers for 8 hours straight!) Besides that, some people did not put the right class/right name to the person they wanna deliver to and we could not locate the sender as well!

On Wednesday, tomorrow (16/2), please put your names on a list I'll be posting up on the Interact Board if your orders didn't get through. Probationers' Seminar for 2011 will be on the 26th of February 2011.
There was no meeting for this week (sorry I didn't mention earlier, girls!)
Please be reminded as well that Interact meetings are only on the first and third week :-)
Interactors who are in charge of projects must speak to their Board Of Directors at least a month before the project will be held. Don't be afraid to approach the Board Of Directors, we won't bite!

Details are as follows:

And yes, you are required to wear your full interact uniform, which means your shirt, skirt, tie, court shoes and Interact tag. To Muslim girls who wear scarves, you are required to wear a dark blue scarf (like the colour of the skirt). Please refrain from using decorated scarves (lace, rhinestones, etc.). To the Interact probes, you are required to wear your school uniform and your Interact probie tag.
There will also be an Interact quiz taking place tomorrow. Don't worry, everything that will be quizzed is on the pamphlet that we have given to you during the IU Dance Workshop before the Chinese New Year holidays.
We'll see you at the meeting, and welcome back to school :-)

Hi Interactors!

I'm really, really very sorry for the lack of updates, guys. And welcome to the new Interact probationers! You have made a wise choice by choosing Interact to join this year :-)

In the past few meetings, we have discussed a few things, among which are that this year there will be a new system, in which Interactors will be paired off by the Board Of Directors and will be sorted out into the 4 different avenues; Finance, Community Service, Club Service and International Understanding (kind of like when wizards and witches get sorted out into different houses in Harry Potter :-P). These pairs have been given the projects under their respective avenue and will have to plan the said projects together, but they will be guided by the respective Board Of Director. The list is on the Interact Club board (if you still don't know where it is, it's near the 2 pay phones near the Koperasi).

A reminder to current Interactors & probationers as well: please bring a notebook & pen with you at all times during meetings. We don't like explaining things many times over during meetings and having people come up to us a few days later to ask about something we have mentioned during said meetings. Also a reminder from our Club Service Director, Int. Thabeena, please wear your Interact badges and for the probies, please wear your probie badge. The probie badge basically looks a little bit like this:

That is basically what it should look like. But bear in mind, it should only be the ICSA colours: blue, silver & black. Be creative! Use glitter! Project points will be awarded for creativityyyyy! :-) And don't forget to wear this badge AT ALL TIMES. Even when there isn't any Interact meeting. Ah, I should also add that the adjective that you choose should describe what you are in one word. Again, be creative! (But don't use words like sexy, hot, etc. That would just be awkward for everyone...)

And as you all may know, the Interact Coordinating Committee (ICC) of 2011 has already begun planning & preparations for our annual ICC Concert! You may find out more on this event by clicking here.

If you've got talent and are interested to perform for ICC Concert, don't be afraid to approach any of the Board Of Directors, and we shall steer you to the right path :-)

Aaaand finally, mark your calendars, Interactors, as there will be an IU Dance Workshop on the 28th of January 2011 in the school hall, from 2.30 - 4.30 pm. But don't forget that the 1st commandment states that thou shall be punctual, so coming a little earlier won't hurt! For the current Interactors, please wear your Interact shirt and school track pants, and for those who don't have it, you may wear the school shirt and school track pants. Please abide by the school rules, yeah, we are still in school, so no wearing yoga pants or of the sort ok!

Hey Interactors!

There are a few issues I would like to address in this post:

For those of you who attended meeting earlier today, you guys know all about our preparations for the Blink Carnival this upcoming Saturday, but for those of you who didn't attend (or didn't pay attention, cough cough), I've prepared a table for your convenience :-)

And for those of you who are part of the Organizing Committee of the ICSA Christmas Party, there will be a meeting held on Monday (22/11)from 3.00 pm - 5.00 pm in McDonalds Seksyen 14.
Reminder to all Interactors: You have to sell 5 Blink Carnival coupons, and hand over the money to Int. Sarah D by Friday.
You also have to bring RM 13.50 for your Blink Carnival t-shirts and pay it up to Int. Aleeza.
Reminder to those attending the Interact District Conference, you have to pay an additional RM 30 for your transportation/insurance by Friday as well.
And a gentle reminder to all of you: please dress appropriately when you are staying back for the Blink Carnival preparations. No shorts allowed! 3 quarter pants are acceptable. Don't wear japanese slippers. Wear shoes, preferably sandals. Feel free to wear comfortable shoes, as you'll be on your feet the whole day.

ICCPJ Carnival 2010

How are you post-examination people doing? For those of you who don't know, there is an ICCPJ event coming up. No, not ICC Concert, but the ICCPJ Carnival.

Details are as follows:

Date: 20th November 2010
Time: 9am - 3pm
Venue: SMK(P) Sri Aman
Theme: The Blink; With hope, nothing is impossible.

There will be food, drinks, games, performances and fun fun fun! This carnival aims to raise RM10,000 for future use of the ICCPJ and it's future activities which will benefit the community.

Hello Interactors of Sri Aman!

As ya'll know, there will be an Interact party held tomorrow on the 30th of July 2010.

The objective of this party is to bridge the gap between Interactors, as well as to get to know each other better :-)

Details are as follows-

Date: 30 July 2010

Time: 7.30 pm - 10.00 pm

Venue: Mont Kiara Tiffany Apartments (Int. Kaeshini's house).

Attire: Anything decent, ok!

It is compulsory for Form 3s to attend the party. We understand that the Form 2s and 4s are having their August test next week, so it's ok if you guys can't come, but you still should support the club!

If you have any inquiries whatsoever, don't be shy to approach any of the Board Of Directors and ask us, ok?

We won't eat you ;-)
